More About Aria
Owner, Francesco Giofredda, believes that Aria is a perfect representation of what a Chianti Classico should taste like – and it is only produced in certain vintages when conditions are perfect.
After manually harvesting and sorting the Sangiovese grapes from their estate, the Casa Al Vento team presses and begins fermentation. The wine is left on it’s pomace for 25-30 days in stainless steel tanks to gain colour and flavour. Once fermentation is complete, Aria then spends 12 months ageing in neutral French oak barriques before it is bottled and laid to rest for 2 years.
The name Aria translates to “air” in English, referencing the strong winds that move up and down the Casa Al Vento vineyards. However, if pronounced like a-Ria, the name of this wine becomes a touching reference to one of the the original founders of the company, Ria Gioffreda, wife of Giuseppe and mother to Francesco; a suitable name for the first wine that Casa Al Vento vineyards ever produced.
What was once a small medieval village, is now the quaint estate of Borgo Casa Al Vento. Located in the scenic comune of Gaiole in Chianti, with only 7 hectares of vineyard land, Casa Al Vento sits at the windy top of a 450m hill overlooking their idyllic Tuscan property; vines, olive trees, rosemary bushes and oak forests cover the estate — and all of this is visible from their casa! In the 1990s, the Giofredda family decided to restore this ancient village to a functioning winery, restaurant and villa-style hotel that we see there today. Their eco-friendly wine production facility was upgraded in the early 2000s and now the winery is self-sufficient with their own bottling and labeling lines. Viticulture has been 100% certified organic since 2012. You can see cover crops between the rows of vines to promote biodiversity within the vineyard. With a combination of Galestro, Alberese and red clay soil in their lands, the Sangiovese varietal thrives and therefore comprises 5 of the 7 hectares of vineyard land (the other 2ha are for Merlot plantings, which create Casa Al Vento’s IGT wines). Due to the steep elevations of their vineyards, machinery cannot be used through the vines and therefore all wines must be manually harvested. The fruit is hand-selected, bunch by bunch, which ensures optimal maturity and once it arrives in the cellar, grapes are hand sorted. This level of care from vineyard to cellar is what drives the consistent quality for Casa Al Vento’s three DOCG Chiantis.Read More About
